John Morrissey died May 1, 1878 at Saratoga. Former boxer, N.Y. State Senator and U.S. Congressman… Owner of opulent gambling casino in Saratoga  [now a Museum] where great excitement was caused when his beautiful wife Susan visited it for afternoon tea (no ladies were permitted in the gambling area).… Funeral from home of his mother-in-law Mrs. Levi Smith, 583 River Street, Troy.

“People” by John Scanlon

SUNDAY RECORD Apr 5, 1989

“Bob Anderson, retired Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor who has done a lot of volunteer research for the Rensselaer County Historical Society has the answers to some questions asked in a column here last week on John Morrissey, former heavyweight boxing champion and a Troy native.

“Anderson says the John F. Cox stove factory where Morrissey worked was located on the old Troy Iron Works property in South Troy.  Anderson said Morrissey trained for the fight with John Heenan at the Abbey, a private home on Second Avenue between 124th and 125th streets in Lansingburgh.

“In answer to a writer’s questions about Morrissey’s wife, Adeline(sic) Smith, Anderson said she lived with her mother at 583 River St. and later at 737 River St. in 1878 and a monument was erected on his grave in St. Peter’s Cemetery.  His wife died in 1898.”
