WHAT IS A MAILING LIST?

A mailing list is a way of forwarding messages to others who are interested in the same genealogical research as you. You send your message to the list and it is sent to everyone who has subscribed to that list. And everything that anyone else sends to the list will be sent to you. It is a great way to find others who are researching in the same area or are researching the same surname.

A mail list does not have an address that you can go to. It is not a place on the Internet. It only forwards email messages. It will have an address something like: LISTNAME@rootsweb.com

WHAT TYPES (KINDS) OF LISTS ARE AVAILABLE?

There are different types of lists which cover different interests such as surnames, states, groups of states, ethnic interests, software, and general interest to name a few. There are structured research lists, and chatty fun lists, and everything in between.

Lists come in Digest and Mail form, and the biggest lists also have an Index form. In most cases, the -L signifies list mode (you will receive a copy of every message posted to the list as a single email) and the -D signifies digest mode (you receive groups of messages every day or so, depending on how busy the list is).

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU JOIN A MAILING LIST

When you subscribe to a large, and/or especially active Mailing List, what should you expect?

You will receive every e-mail message that other Mailing List members send to the list, whether or not those messages pertain to your immediate research. There is no way for you to selectively receive only messages that are of personal interest to you. If you are subscribed in list or mail mode, each message will be received as a separate e-mail as soon as the poster sends the message to the list. If you are subscribed in digest mode, you will receive several messages grouped together in a digest -- fewer separate e-mails, but delayed a bit until there are a sufficient number of messages to be bundled into a digest and sent out to you.

You will be able to post a message on the list about some aspect of your genealogical research involving the subject matter of the list. You may ask for help or information, or you may post data or respond to someone else's query -- participating in the ongoing discussion on the list. Those who share their genealogical information usually receive more information back than those who only ask for research help or post generic queries.

To make the most efficient use of a Mailing List, take time to review messages posted to it (even those that on the surface have no connection to your research) as there may be a clue or connection you wouldn't notice at first glance. When posting messages choose a brief, but informative, subject line. You want your message to attract the attention of other list members who may be quickly scanning the list messages for items of interest to them. Give them a reason to read your messages. Put sufficient information in the message body of your post so that others can determine quickly and easily if they might have information for you or can establish a connection to your family.

What you can learn from subscribing to a Mailing List is often directly related to the thought and preparation you put into your list participation. Don't sit back and expect someone to feed you answers or do your research. The greatest value of Mailing Lists is in the sharing.

http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/NYIrishList/

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Irish/NY-IRISH.html

This is a discussion list for anyone who has an interest in the Genealogy,  History, Culture or
anything related to the Irish immigration to New York.   This list is for the whole state of New York, including of course, New York City where most of the Irish immigrants first stepped off the boat.  If your ancestor lived or even just passed through New York, they have a special type of culture.  The fun part of the list is figuring our what part or our traditions originated in Ireland or originated from New York.

Because of the many different immigrants all living in poor neighborhoods when they first came over, many of our traditions are a result of the many nationalities living together.  This list will be a place where we discuss those traditions that include holidays, recipes, music, weddings, births,  funerals/wakes, etc.  Hopefully, in our discourse we will find where the tradition started and which are pure Irish, which are NY Irish or which are just New York.

List maintains a Volunteer Lookup Service and website includes NY Irish Surname Roster.

http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/NYCANNY/

The NY-CAN-NY mailing list is for all those genealogy researchers who have ancestors that traveled from Canada to New York State or New York State to Canada. It is hopeful that we will get a number of listers from both Canada and New York State to help one another and listers from other states and countries with information that pertains to their country/state.  List website includes a NY CAN NY Surname Roster.
