COUNTY LIMERICK

Tithe Applotment

Defaulters

 1831

County Limerick
    Coonagh, Clanwilliam & Smallcounty Baronies

Research Notes:  An organized campaign of resistance to the payment of tithes came to a head in 1831 in large scale refusals to pay the tax. Local Church of Ireland clergymen were ordered to make a list of all those in their parish that did not pay the tithe and the list was called, the "Tithe Defaulters". However, only 127 have survived, many from counties Kilkenny and Tipperary. They are on microfiche by county at the National Library of Ireland and have been transcribed by Stephen McCormac.  In turn, his work has been printed in the Irish Genealogist and recorded on CD-Rom. The index on the Limerick section of this website was transcribed from the Irish Genealogist (1990) by Pat Connors.  There are links on the below pages to Ancestry where you can buy the cd.  These records can be a link to follow your family between the Tithe Applotments and the Griffith's Valuations.
